Module 3, Activity 6, Step 2

How can I use the Internet to support my teaching and students’ learning?

How can I ensure responsible and appropriate use of the Internet?

  1. Students will use the internet to research the Cabinet post that they will be assigned at random. West Sedona School filters all internet content. Students will be told that sites that end in .gov are not filtered. Students will need 3 internet sources to find the information that must be put into their brochure project. As the educator, it is my job to circulate around the room to assure my students are on task and doing what is expected of them.

  2. Cheryl, also, by using the .gov sites, the kids can know that the information is going to be accurate.

Has there been any discussion about unblocking good educational sites for the studetns?

  3. I feel I can use the Internet to support my teaching and student learning by helping students fully understand the copyright and fair use guidelines and instill in them the importance of using these tools to follow the rules and gather more in-depth, complete research.
I can ensure responsible and appropriate use of the internet by being available and paying attention to the research students are doing. If they don't understand or know something it is my job to help them through this process. I want them to feel comfortable asking me questions so that I know they are getting the information they need, that it is accurate, and that they understand they need to work hard to do their research correctly.

How can I use the Internet to support my teaching and students’ learning?
I can use the Internet to support my teaching and students’ learning in a myriad of ways. I will begin by modeling Internet use. Attendance and grades are both maintained using an online program. Using Internet to sites as an anticipatory activity will help to attract and develop student interest. Webquests and scavenger hunts require the students become pro-active in their learning. Developing a class Blog or Wiki will build on student communication.
The Internet will be useful in Legends, Myths, Fables, & Tales as the students conduct research, view pictures, conduct a scavenger hunt, and communicate with others.

How can I ensure responsible and appropriate use of the Internet?
I can ensure responsible and appropriate use of the Internet by modeling this behavior and making my expectations clear. Students must be taught what the Internet is and how it works. They need to learn about Internet safety practices and copyright law. The Internet is an incredible twenty-first century tool, we must help our students develop an understanding of and respect for.

  5. Re: Internet scenarios
Just like any aspect of your classroom, you need to set clear guidelines and enforce just consequences. If I took the time to set up computer lab time for students to create their own wiki, and students where using the computers for other things- their would be consequences! First, I could check which students had made reasonable progress on the assignment, those students would continue. The rest of them would somehow have to create a wiki-like document on paper. Whatever journaling and posting would all be handwritten.
I would also follow school disciple procedures, and call home.

  6. I think their are many ways in which the internet can improve teaching and learning. For myself, the internet allows me to research a topic or a unit so that I can be confident in the content before I teach it. Also, I'm learning more and more about all the teacher resources out there that save time.
I really like the idea of creating a wiki for my classroom. I feel that students would be more inclined to reflect on their learning if it was in an online setting rather than paper and pencil. I could post related articles to our area of study. I could require students to post a video relating to the topic of study. The possibilities are endless.
You can ensure safe internet behavior by creating an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) in which students and parents agree to rules and consequences of inappropriate internet behavior. Also, students today need to learn about internet behavior. Just as we teach them appropriate classroom, library, and recess behavior- students need to learn how to act in an online environment.

  7. How can I use the Internet to support my teaching and students’ learning?

Research is the most common way to use the Internet to support learning. There are endless resources available to students, but educating students to the resources that are accurate and helpful can be challenging. Students want to find answers quickly and generally stick with the same websites for all research. They will often pick the website that offers the shortest definition. Taking the time to cover the how to of research is important. I also like to use Webquests, they are structured so students must solve real world problems through research and activities that help lead them through the process. They generally have students work collaboratively and lend themselves to different forms of evaluations. They are rich in content and help students learn conceptually rather than learning a process.

How can I ensure responsible and appropriate use of the Internet?

Monitoring students progress is important. Also, pre-teaching responsible and appropriate use is needed. Before beginning any web based instruction a teacher should cover this area and should review and refresh as needed.

  8. Module 3 Pedagogical Practices Discussion
Neil said to post here and not on the wiki.
    Scenario 1: Websurfing
I would provide internet rules and have a big discussion before starting a project. A rubric would also be provided before beginning the project and a list of clearly defined check points and deadlines would be listed as well.
    Scenario 2: Inappropriate Content
Again I would provide internet rules and have a discussion before beginning. I would also pre-select websites where students could find the information they are looking for.
    Scenario 3: Cyberbullying
We would have a class discussion ahead of time where we would discuss the definition and consequences of cyberbullying. Clear no tolerance guidelines would be provided to each student.
In all three cases, significant teacher presence and participation would be critical so that students would know you were watching them at all times. Clear deadlines and selected websites also would eliminate many of the problems in these scenarions.

  9. Module 3 Activities 7 and 8:

    Regardng the scenerios -

Key to all three situations is consistant monitoring of the students while they work. I let students know that I will be randomly checking computer histories to see what sites they have accessed. If I feel that a student is advanced in computer internet use, I let them know that the technology department can track all activity from any computer within the district, even if the computer history was deleted. This generally keeps students honest, but the walk around and looking over their shoulders is the best method for keeping them on task.

Another tool is a contract that students must sign - this is an agreement that students enter into for appropriate internet use. If they violate the contract disciplinary actions will be taken based the violation. Signing a formal contract helps promote appropriate use of computers.

Activity 8 (Internet impact on student learning)

Depending on how well the teacher has planned for the use of the internet their can be range from a small to large impact. Using the internet requires planning and monitoring if this is not done well students will generally play around and not receive much academic growth from its use. Well planned and structured internet activities will yield high academic growth and foster a student's use of the computer as a learning tool, rather than a tool for play or inappropriate behavior.

  10. With the unit I will be teaching, I can do research online separately from my students to have ready-made lesson plans with photos of the native peoples of West Africa. Together, using the Smartboard, we can do geographical activities so they can visualize where in the world West Africa is! A teacher shouldn't just search images on the Smartboard in front of students since images are sometimes unfiltered for student consumption. Some images could be inappropriate or disturbing since there is a lot of violence happening in other parts of Africa and those images could pop up. The internet is a very valuable tool!!

  11. I can use the Internet to support my teaching and my students' learning by responsibly screening a variety of sites for relevancy, authenticity and usefulness.
At West Sedona School, we have the BESS filter system which prevents blatant misuse and inappropriate access. That said, students often waste a huge anount of time aimlessly searching for 'whatever'! The best thing I can do as a teacher is to sift through and provide my students with a more narrow yet challenging set of sites to search from in a timely way.
